Don’t try to shout down those who are trying to help
Thursday, 17th August 2023
• I WAS delighted to find that George Curley, (So who does offer the help?, August 10), had read my letter of July 27, (Where people go for help in Holborn & St Pancras).
However pleasure turned to bemusement when I realised that he had not read it terribly carefully and had therefore missed my point entirely and got my name wrong.
My letter was the expression of a very serious point: Camden’s tenants are being driven to despair by their experiences with Camden housing services, including clinical depression, as certified by a doctor.
This I know because, as chair of the local Conservative Association, desperate residents are contacting me for help, despite there being no Conservative councillors in the constituency and 34 Labour councillors they could have turned to.
I was standing up for people who felt that their elected representatives – Labour councillors – were failing to assist them at their time of need.
Mr Curley accused me of having “a cheek” to do so and urged readers “Don’t fall for their [that is, the Conservatives’] lies,” a serious accusation.
Holborn and St Pancras Conservatives will not be silenced by insults and smears. I will never betray the confidence of the people who shared their desperate experiences with me but I know that very many Camden tenants and leaseholders will recognise their frustration and despair.
How galling to hear voices from the left defending this unacceptable situation and attempting to shout down the very people who are trying to help those who need it so urgently. Camden deserves better.
