Recycling bins - Malden Road

Recycling bins in Malden Road

• IN response to the piece (Eco blow: only 26 per cent of rubbish is recycled, March 18), perhaps a more accurate headline would be, only 26 per cent of recycled rubbish is actually collected!

Since the start of the year, the bi-weekly recycling collection on the Cumberland Market estate has been reduced to, at best, once a week. More often than not recycling remains uncollected for three weeks or more.

Not only does this lead to an unsightly mountain of cardboard etc but it means that caretakers have to dispose of the resulting mess with the household waste. This is not a good use of caretakers’ time and undermines the recycling efforts of residents.

Unfortunately reporting missed collections via the council’s website is also a waste of time. After numerous reports I have yet to receive a response; and there is no evidence that the reports are even acted upon.

Please, Camden, we are with you on this one. But you and your contractors need to deliver on the basics before dreaming up some incentive scheme to improve recycling rates that will soon be forgotten.
