Cllr Adam Harrison and fly-tipping sign

Cllr Adam Harrison helps to put up warning signs in King’s Cross

• UNFORTUNATELY the cabinet member for planning and a sustainable Camden, Cllr Adam Harrison, in his letter (Fly-tipping & enforcement) and in the headline report (Grand plan for fining litterbugs), both October 17, failed to divulge the activities of his staff.

The proxy, outsourced, firm, Kingdom, was reported in this newspaper, fining a disabled pensioner £450 for leaving a small table outsider her home for collection by her neighbour. What happened to her?

Attempts by residents to detect the big litterers who make large sums from their activities are ignored.

I photographed one such in the process and sent it to the community safety officer; it was ignored.

I then offered to allow my premises to be used for a camera, as opposite there was a regular dumping site. I even offered to pay for the CCTV system. Again rejected.

I further suggested a camera be installed to detect fly-tipping next to the area in the photo; again ignored.

For many years I regularly spent part of my Sunday afternoons litter-picking on a small green site.

It became increasingly difficult to find an empty bin to put my spoils in as Camden Council had removed four litter bins from the location.

I asked an “enforcement officer” would I be fined if I left the full sacks next to a full bin. Yes, I was told, and would be taken to court if I could pay as happened to the above disabled pensioner.

Is Cllr Harrison aware of these actions as I am not the only one so treated?

Officers will not fine me as I have stopped litter-picking. Volunteers could help reduce and prevent littering.

However, the council obviously does not want their cooperation, preferring to get money from vulnerable people and thus not saving money for our cash-strapped authority.

It also gives opportunities for grandstanding of council cabinet members.
