Pond Square

Pond Square: ‘How depressingly down and drab…’

• WE are fortunate that Camden has so many charming enclaves and beautiful residential neighbourhoods – none more so than Highgate.

Every week one of my daily walks takes me up the hill and through Highgate village. And I’m always struck by how depressingly down and drab is its centre – Pond Square. It has barren acres of hard-standing, tired, old tarmac.

It could be so much more imaginative, bio-diverse and a credit to the village. And one can’t even blame wicked Tories because it has for years had two Labour councillors and the eco-friendly Green Party councillor Siân Berry.

Come on Camden! Instead of concentrating on beautifying side-streets around Tottenham Court Road (where very few residents actually live), how about some TLC and creativity for the heart of Highgate?
