• “WE believe fervently in the powers of democracy and debate”; a fitting epitaph for Eric Gordon, (Eric Gordon, editor and founder of the Camden New Journal, dies at 89, April 5).

Never more in Camden’s history has this been necessary. The Camden New Journal and its Letters pages is a bulwark against the ever-increasing secrecy and autocracy of senior officers supported by many supine councillors.

We learn about increasing hordes of rapacious developers and growing numbers of numbers of “consultants”. Without the investigative journalism and informative Letters pages residents would be kept in the dark.

Hopefully the excellent team of journalists will keep this torch burning. Eric you will be much missed.
