Your report on HS2 & land ‘flattened for nothing’ – look elsewhere in the borough

Thursday, 19th October 2023

• YOUR report (Flattened by HS2 for nothing, October 12) will remind former residents of Bacton Low Rise in Gospel Oak of a similar fate at the hands of Camden Council.

Residents were promised new homes there back in 2012 to be ready by 2017 and are still waiting.

In the condemnation of the HS2 Euston Tory fiasco, horror was expressed at the prospect of the potential sell-off of the Euston project to the private sector.

It is reported that such a sell-off is planned for the Bacton Low Rise site later this year.

Councillor Danny Beales, on local TV, demanded government consultation with Euston residents.

How different from his refusal to discuss changes in the plans for the West Kentish Town Estate (WKTE) with residents.

Indeed he even, reportedly, threatened to end the WKTE project and use the funding elsewhere if changes were not accepted.

Given the experience of the broken promises to Bacton Low Rise residents, it seems that WKTE residents were a little naïve, to put it mildly, to trust the council.

Perhaps Cllr Beales and his Camden cabinet colleagues can explain the contradictions in their approach to consulting residents on development strategies.

He seems perfectly willing to make political points but to ignore similar council behaviour. And if the above information is incorrect, perhaps Cllr Beales can put residents right.

Meanwhile our local Labour councillors keep silent on the West Kentish Town Estate and Bacton Low Rise developments.
