Would there be support for a ‘hard' Brexit?

Thursday, 1st June 2017

• VICTORIA Ibbett informs/reminds us (Questions to answer, May 25) that the Hampstead & Kilburn Conservative candidate, Claire-Louise Leyland, has received an endorsement from Ukip leader Paul Nuttall; and that Ukip has decided to step aside in this constituency.

This suggests to me that, if elected, Ms Leyland would support her leader’s stance on the issue of a “hard” Brexit.

If Mrs May, who supported Remain, had refused to trigger Article 50, when the time for that arrived, she would naturally have been accused of being anti-democratic, and disregarding the Referendum result.

But, since the majority for Leave was only 52 per cent, surely she is being at least as anti-democratic, and disrespectful of the Referendum result, by her insistence on going for a “hard” Brexit.

If Ms Leyland is taking the same stance, she is equally guilty of being anti-democratic; I suggest voters take this into account when deciding who to vote for. I would also remind voters that, in Hampstead & Kilburn, there was a majority of 75 per cent for Remain.
