What will the election candidates do for our schools?

Thursday, 11th May 2017

• YOUR front page report (Schools go begging to parents, May 4) I found to be absolutely staggering.

Our area is home to world class schools, state funded or otherwise, but it is heartbreaking to read that our comprehensives are asking their pupils to fill empty tubes of Smarties as a means of fundraising.

It is simply unsustainable for the average school in Camden to be losing £690 per pupil.

Those who warned against these changes months ago were accused of “scaremongering” when we suggested class sizes would increase, or that teachers would have to be made redundant, but that is exactly what is happening.

As the general election nears, though all eyes seem to be on the leaders of the various parties, my focus is entirely on what each candidate will do for our local schools.

We know that the Labour Party have promised to maintain current education funding, but what of the Conservatives? Beyond the message of “strong and stable”, I haven’t read much from how their candidate will respond to these cuts to schools. This is a huge shame and parents will be right to ask why.

Your editorial was spot on when it said that “Brexit masks the coming crisis” for our schools. If Labour are the only party willing to do or even say something about these funding cuts then I know where my vote is going this June 8.
