South End Green regularly experiences flooding [David Douglas]

• MIKE Beary is right to draw attention to South End Green as a destination for flood water, (What about an effective flood-prevention strategy?, February 29).

The green sits on an arm of the buried Fleet River, where the Hampstead Brook drains the western side of the Heath and all Hampstead east of Fitzjohn’s Avenue. When the Fleet rises in heavy rain, it has filled basements in local shops.

Global warming has made heavy rainstorms more frequent and more violent. They will get still heavier and come more often. Worse, the change is accelerating.

South End Green needs a plan to defend it against the coming downpours. What is being done?
