We should fight tooth and nail to save our play centres

PLAY centres are warning parents that in order to stay open they will need to charge as government funding ends. Our much-loved, diverse, community playgroups will change dramatically. No longer will children, and parents from all backgrounds play and talk together. Only those who can afford the £2 to £3 a class will keep coming regularly. As a parent I’ve found these classes invaluable. They force me to get out of the house, to socialise with other mums. They give me and my son a welcome, fulfilling rhythm to our week. We go to a group about three times a week, sometimes two in one day. I can’t keep that up once charges are applied. Few of us will be able to. Closure of our centres can only be a matter of time. These are precious spaces in which to play, take shelter, sing, meet, chat, and befriend children and parents from all backgrounds. Parents need support, especially in those early years when the days feel so very long. We should be incredibly proud of our playgroups like Little Stars and Camden Square. And, for the strength of our communities, we should be fighting tooth and nail to keep them open.
