• MEG Weston Smith laments the cost of electing a replacement councillor for the Hampstead Town ward which she understands to be in the region of £20,000, (Hampstead Town election cost should not be borne by the citizens, June 9).

I have put myself forward as an independent candidate to represent my local community after much thought and taking soundings from voters and the support of my family, friends and work colleagues.

There must be a proper debate this time round with candidates’ views on both local issues, and their energy and time for the position being suitably scrutinised.

I call on my fellow candidates to ensure that we all meet together at least once during the campaign at a formal hustings to ensure that voters have a chance to properly quiz us all.
