Hampstead Town election cost should not be borne by the citizens

• I UNDERSTAND that the cost to elect a replacement councillor for Hampstead Town ward is in the region of £20,000, (Labour’s history maker steps down less than a month after election win, May 26).

This should not be borne by the citizens who pay council tax to Camden Council for use in the community. Paying for the rerun is not a proper charge on the council’s funds.

The cause of the rerun is the irresponsible behaviour of one political party and they must pay.
