We need a task force for the homeless

• CAMDEN’s director of community services has called for a “holistic approach” to safeguarding homeless individuals (Hotel guests say view is spoilt by homeless, October 19).

This should mean a comprehensive task force to help integrate both homeless people and beggars (not always the same) into society. It would entail concerted action between organisations such as councils, mental health services, charities, and the churches.

Extensive research would be required on the root causes of individual problems and on areas that attract homeless people or beggars. It would also be essential to win the trust of those identified as being at risk.

Coming from a “nobody” (in fact a concerned citizen with experience of housing problems), such suggestions are easily ignored.

The issue demands vitally urgent attention all the same. The capital should follow the example of Manchester, which already has a homelessness task force.
