Was that freedom of speech?

Thursday, 27th June 2024

• IN relation to the six arrests outside Kentish Town station, the June 20 letter from Martin Plaut criticises the pro-Palestine protesters.

But there is another side to the story. I live round the corner from there. Along with some neighbours I went along to listen to local pensioner Stephen Kapos, Holocaust survivor and supporter of Palestinian rights.

A small group of “counter protesters” turned up, some arrived in cars draped with the Israeli flag and others were waving the Union Jack. The police permitted them to mingle freely in the crowd. They told us it was their right to “freedom of speech”.

OK, waving flags, and the odd heckling is fine. But non-stop screaming at those of us who wanted to listen to what a quietly-spoken, elderly, Jewish man has to say in criticising Israeli policy, does that constitute freedom of speech?
