THE groundbreaking Vagina Museum says it will be evicted from its home in Camden Market next month. It has been open since 2019 and provided a place for people to learn about vaginas, vulvas and the gynaecological anatomy.

The museum’s inaugural exhibition, Muff-busters, had debunked myths including “you’ll lose your virginity if you use a tampon” and “having loads of sex will make your vagina loose”.

But, this week the museum found out its lease would not be renewed.

Florence Schechter, the museum’s director, told the New Journal: “We’re a museum, if we don’t have a building it puts us in threat of not existing anymore. If we don’t have a building, what are we going to do?

“We built up so much momentum and we have such a huge audience base. It would be a loss to the community and also a loss to the international feminist community.”

The museum was offered a second-floor space in Camden Market to move to, but Ms Schechter fears that would lead to a fall in visitors.

“The big thing about when people visit us is that they are just on a nice day out in Camden and then they see a sign and they go, ‘Woah, a Vagina Museum what is that?’ and then they come in, and they learn all about this stuff,” said Ms Schechter.

“That’s our USP. On the second floor, I don’t think anyone would come and visit us. I think our footfall would absolutely tank.”

The Vagina Museum had already started searching for a new space before the eviction notice. “If you were to come on the weekend pre-Covid, there would be lines of people waiting to come in, so we wanted to have more space for everybody,” said Ms Schechter. “Even though we were looking for a new space anyway, this is a deadline which we weren’t expecting.”

An appeal has now gone out for help in finding a new location.

A spokesperson for Camden Market said: “The Vagina Museum is an important destination that has had great publicity, and we don’t doubt their ability to draw footfall.” They added that its offer of a “larger location” had been declined but “we are still happy to negotiate with the team should interest change at all”.
