A GRASSROOTS football club is urging new fans to help them on and off the pitch in their bid to become the best men’s team in the borough.

Camden United have made a flying start to the season in the top-flight of the Middlesex County League. They have taken 16 points from a possible 21 – which is no mean feat considering all seven of their league games so far have been on the road while they waited for their home ground to become available.

With October now heralding a host of home fixtures, United are inviting supporters to snap up free tickets to go along and cheer on the team.

But club co-founder Hafid Ali knows only too well that the squad will have to keep performing on the field if they are going to encourage fans to tackle the 90 minute-plus round trip to the New River Stadium in Wood Green.

Explaining the trek, Hafid said: “In order to be eligible for promotion, we have to play at a ground with a stand, and should we move up to the next step of the football pyramid, the ground would also have to have a turnstile.

“We would obviously love to play closer to Camden, but the appropriate facilities just don’t exist; it’s out of our control. The closest place we could find that suited all of our needs was the New River Stadium.

“We appreciate that we’re asking fans to travel quite a way – the best thing we can do is keep delivering on the pitch and give them every reason to want to come and watch.”

United, though, need more than just support in the stands to help them achieve their dream. With an outlay of around £600 per home game, the volunteer-led club is also going to need vital financial backing, too.

“Every home game we have to pay for the pitch and the referees, and we have to put on food for the match officials and the away team. That’s at least £600 per home fixture,” said Hafid.

“Of course, it would be great if a company or local business wanted to step in and help us with the whole cost, but more realistically, we are hoping that a number of smaller businesses and individuals will want to support us.

“We have put together a number of tailored packages, which include helping us with catering on matchdays, or maybe sponsoring either our home or away kits.

“There’s also options like sponsoring a single matchday, or sponsoring an individual player. Any and all help would be really appreciated.”
