Tower scheme will put homes in the shade

Impression of how the One Museum Street/Selkirk House development could look
• MY mother’s flat in WC1 will be badly affected by the proposed new development at One Museum Street.
She and many of her neighbours will be plunged into semi-darkness by this building as it is so tall and so close to their windows.
The Daylight Assessment report shows that she and her neighbours will receive unacceptable levels of daylight, which means that they will need their lights on for most of the day.
This is because the huge tower block is on the south side of the site and therefore blocks the sun from the rest of the nearby buildings, a poor design feature if ever there was one.
The photo of the developer’s model of the site shows how the rest of the buildings are cast into darkness.
The strange thing about this development is that even the new-build housing, especially the affordable and social housing will have unacceptable levels of daylight in their rooms.
Camden Council is being persuaded to allow this eyesore to be built, which will be seen across much of London, because they are enticed by the prospect of more housing and, yes, the borough of Camden does need more housing.
But it does not need housing which fails to meet its own basic standards on daylight and, for that matter, outside space and play space for children as well.
Camden residents should not be fobbed off with inadequate housing. It can and should be designed better.
