This road closure achieved nothing

what30th-1973protest

The original WHAT protest 50 years ago in 1973

• THE closure of West End Lane on “car-free” Sunday did not get rid of traffic: it just moved it, (Here’s to the unsung heroes who care about their patch, September 7).

At 10am Sumatra Road, Dennington Park Road and Pandora Road were all very busy with cars driven by people who would presumably normally use West End Lane.

Sainsbury’s had to have their Sunday delivery on Saturday night, and only got half their order, perhaps because the lorry did not have room for a full extra order on its normal rounds or the driver did not have time to fill it up.

I did not notice more people on West End Lane when I went to Sainsbury’s in the early afternoon. I did not notice people walking in the street, since buses and emergency vehicles could still use the road.

In any case, WHAT stands for West Hampstead Amenity and Transport and transport includes cars. The closure of West End Lane actually achieved nothing.
