AVERAGING just under five goals scored a game, there’s no doubting the team to watch in Division One North of the London & South East Regional Women’s League.
Camden Town WFC continued their phenomenal start to the season on Sunday with an emphatic 4-0 victory over Ebbsfleet United.
The result means that they have now won all five of their league games so far, scoring a staggering 23 goals along the way, while conceding just once.
Manager Darren Smith did his best to calm the hype surrounding the club after the final whistle having watched his side move second in the table, two points behind leaders Dulwich Hamlet Reserves but, crucially, with three games in hand.
“I’m really pleased with the performance and, more importantly, the attitude and application of the players,” he said. “We’ve made a very encouraging start to the season, and the results are a reflection of the work this group is putting in.
“There’s a lot to be positive about. We’re creating opportunities, scoring goals and showing some really good qualities as a team. But we’re also very conscious that we’ve only played five league matches so far, and there’s an enormous amount of football still ahead of us. We’re nowhere near the finished article, and there are areas of our game that we need to keep improving.
“The challenge now is to maintain our standards, remain humble and keep working hard. We’re happy with how things are progressing, but we know we have a long way to go.”
Camden Town’s summer signings lit up Guru Nanak Sports Club in Gravesend, Kent, on Sunday afternoon.
Midfielder Hannah Goffi, who lives in Hampstead, needed just 13 minutes to make her mark as she celebrated her first start for the club by slotting home the opening goal.
Winger Maya Brueckner, who lives in Barnsbury, then scored the goal of the game with a touch of individual brilliance, unleashing a stunning free-kick into the top corner to give Town a 2-0 lead at the break.
Another new recruit, Andrea Chan, made it three just before the hour mark. The striker, who lives in Finsbury Park, demonstrated her attacking instincts when she arrived at the back post to head home Ginny Somers’ inviting cross. Brueckner then completed the rout with her second of the day.
After capping a player-of-the-match performance with a goal, Goffi said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have made my first start for Camden, and to mark the occasion with a goal makes it even more special.
“I felt really good out there today. I wanted to make an impact, work hard for the team and show what I can contribute. To score so early certainly gave me confidence, and I really enjoyed being involved throughout the match.
“I love being part of this group. There’s so much quality in the squad, everyone works incredibly hard for each other, and it’s a really positive environment to be involved in.
“We’ve made a fantastic start to the season, but I think we’re all aware of how much more we can achieve.”
