There are quite a few things that need to be fixed at the libraries

Thursday, 26th October 2017

• I BELIEVE the message given to your reporter about libraries is completely wrong (New digital age where all library computers are on their last legs, October 19).

The computer boxes are not new and have maintenance needs but it is the software and management of the network that is to blame.

Two weeks ago the network was so slow that I emailed the head of libraries, who did nothing. A day or two later, it was so bad that I actually threw in the towel. As I left I noticed that every computer at West Hampstead library was vacant. The network had been like that for a week or more.

The next day I came in and struggled through an email to the council leader to ask if this performance was a device to discourage use to enable the library to be easier to close down at the next round of cuts. I reminded her that an election is seven months away.

The network was back to its usual good self within four hours. To achieve this the boxes were not touched. Spanners were clanked elsewhere and all has become well.

I would like to ask her why all the good chairs have been replaced with nastier ones; why the internet “nannying” software constantly bans sites which are shown to be fine; why libraries do not cycle their books around to give other library users a chance to see them; why nothing on my recent long list of issues supplied to the head of libraries has been fixed?

The election is now six months away.
