The school-run causes a spike in pollution levels – let’s clear the air

• HOW dangerous is the air near your children’s school?
In response to growing concerns about Camden’s filthy air, Camden Air Action has launched an ambitious plan to monitor deadly nitrogen dioxide (NO2) outside all of the borough’s 97 schools (state, private, primary, secondary, children’s centres and public nurseries).
The aim is to give parents, teachers and pupils a snapshot of their own local air quality and to help come up with ways to improve it.
Past studies have indicated that the school-run causes spikes in local air pollution levels and actually subjects drivers and passengers to higher levels of toxic gases than in the street.
Camden Air Action – which includes local community groups, Transitions Towns and Camden Green Party – would like to identify at least one contact in as many schools as possible, to share information and ideas, and link-up schools with each other where appropriate.
This contact can be a staff member or parent.
The NO2 monitors will be installed at the weekend (February 25 and 26 ) and we are looking for volunteers to help.
No technical know-how is required and you don’t need to be a parent. We also welcome donations to cover the cost of the tubes.
