The reasons I drive to the allotment…

• TO your correspondent David Reed (Toxic air kills and we must get rid of cars, September 7), my car is ULEZ-compliant.
It is so clean I don’t pay any tax on it: put my registration into DVLA’s website and it gives £0.00 as the amount owed.
I changed the car when ULEZ was extended to the North and South Circular roads, since my allotment is outside that boundary. In order to buy a replacement (second-hand) car I had to take more money from my equity release lifetime mortgage.
And without that I would have to give up my allotment (as someone else at our site did because he lived within the North Circular and couldn’t afford to replace his car).
So not only would I not have the huge quantity, quality, and choice, of fresh produce – and the exercise which is beneficial both physically and mentally – but I would undoubtedly be chalking up more food miles, which is bad for the planet.
