The NLWA has questions to answer on incineration
Thursday, 7th September 2023
• THERE’S a weird consultation about waste under way, thanks to the North London Waste Authority (NLWA).
It’s strange because they say they care about the climate emergency and want to reduce
waste, but they gloss over their development of a massive new incinerator.
This will spew out hundreds of thousands of tonnes of greenhouse gas every year. And that’s despite government targets for a massive reduction in waste and a cost of around a billion pounds.
So what should the NLWA do?
— First, come clean about the damage incineration does to the world’s climate and stop pretending it’s “green” and “sustainable”.
— Second, start a major programme of local initiatives to drive down waste and stop what they call their “incremental” approach.
— Third, install modern equipment to sort through rubbish and remove stuff that could be recycled.
— Fourth, explain what they are going to do with their massive incinerator white elephant if waste levels really drop in line with the government targets.
Let the NLWA know what you think.
You can go to their website and respond to the consultation before September 15.
