The government should end the injustice affecting Windrush generation victims
Thursday, 6th July 2023
• I NOTED your report about Camden’s commemoration of the Windrush generation and undoubtedly there were events in many parts of the country.
In Camden it is clear there was no mention of the Windrush generation victims (and other Commonwealth citizens) still struggling for the compensation they are due in respect of the injustices wreaked on them by British governments; for example, wrongfully detained, threatened with deportation, and denied access to crucial services like housing and health care.
And now it has emerged some of the Windrush generation who became ill while in the UK were returned to the Caribbean, because they were ill.
I do understand Camden was putting on a joyful event but I believe that support should have been expressed for those who suffered and are still suffering at the hands of the British state.
Not long ago home secretary Suella Braverman revealed that just 26 per cent of claims had been successful. Where they have been offered inadequate compensation they cannot obtain legal aid to challenge the home office.
Also it seems the unit responsible for reforming the home office after the scandal has been quietly disbanded with Braverman, unsurprisingly, claiming that it is time to “move on”.
I am not aware of any action taken in parliament by any opposition parties, MPs or lords, but we should demand that our representatives press the government to finally resolve this injustice.
