The council leader made the wrong call on Chalcots

• CAMDEN Council’s failure to act on fire risk assessments for Chalcots estate has resulted in chaos for nothing.

Some 3,000 council residents were evicted, without notice, late at night, and barred from using their homes for four to six weeks, when there was no outbreak of fire.

It is London Fire Brigade policy to advise residents to remain in their flats in the event of a fire in a high-rise block.

The fact that Camden was first in the queue for a cladding check meant that council leader Georgia Gould panicked and made the wrong call. And she was seriously misled by the fire service who suggested there was nothing she could do to ensure safety that night.

Cllr Gould should have consulted the executive member for housing, who has more experience of these matters, before deciding to evict. She should now do the right thing and apologise to all those affected, then resign.
