The council has failed the visually impaired

• CAMDEN Council is currently consulting on how much people are expected to pay towards their social care.
Unfortunately, and as usual, Camden sent these important documents out to its visually impaired residents in a format that is inaccessible to them.
The documents can be provided in alternative formats if requested but it is difficult to do this if you don’t even know what the document is that you have been sent and contact details are by definition inaccessible!
The council knows who its visually impaired service users are but apparently it is prepared to allow them to disappear under the weight of inadequate “systems”. In doing so, it disenfranchises some of its most vulnerable residents.
The Equality Act 2010 requires service providers to provide information in accessible formats.
It seems the council is happy to ignore its legal obligations.
Camden Council’s logo of eight hands clasped together was designed in 1965 to signify the council’s goal to bring communities together and to help one another.
It is a pity that this symbol appears to have lost that meaning today.
