The challenge of tackling health, inequality and promoting independence…

Thursday, 16th November 2017

• SO Life in the community – a very short story – was the headline over the letter from Councillor Pat Callaghan, cabinet member for tackling health, inequality and promoting independence (New Journal, November 9).

I’m inclined to think that this wonderfully soothing and comforting piece of writing was compiled for Camden by J Lewis’ Christmas copywriters, or maybe it has been plagiarised from CS Lewis?

It evokes a scene from a window with snow falling and a warm fire lighting up the faces of the predominantly white-haired, but incredibly independent, Save Swiss Cottage campaigners as their spirits rise in the presence of this embrace from Camden’s new Madonna for the Aged.

But alas no! In spite of her proclamations, Ms Callaghan has remained uncommunicative with these stalwart campaigners. In the meantime they continue to battle with the inequality that is endemic in planning law giving developers the winning hand.

Now faced with the developers’ construction management plan designed to despatch these aging campaigners to an early grave by subjecting them to relentless diesel fumes and a panoramic noise scenario, Ms Callaghan has a final opportunity to salvage one of her three mission-stated objectives; health. Will she rise to the challenge?
