The 20mph speed limit needs to be enforced
Thursday, 6th July 2023
• WE continue to raise serious safety concerns about our street with the council, but no action is taken.
Highgate West Hill is a 20mph zone, but anyone that uses it knows that speeding by vehicles of all types (HGVs, cars, bicycles) is constant.
Despite schools in the area, and many people using the street to access Hampstead Heath, nothing is done to keep us safe.
A car has been flipped, a postbox knocked over, and a pedestrian lamp crossing knocked over. Pets have been killed.
Apparently the situation still isn’t grave enough for the council to take action though. Camden has a duty of care towards its residents. The speed limit needs to be enforced. Why won’t the council keep us safe?
Our street is a weight restricted zone, yet there is a continuous trail of HGVs going up and down it. Vibrations are felt in homes; the bottom of the street is covered in potholes, the pavement damaged.
A combination of the speeding and traffic type means our parked cars are continuously knocked and our insurance premiums continue to rise.
The gas and water pipes, which are very old, are constantly bursting under the pressure. This means road works and very angry road users. What about better signage? The use of ANPR? Again no action to enforce any restrictions is taken.
Bizarrely the council has found (with limited consultation with residents), that of significant importance is renaming Swain’s Lane roundabout.
I wonder what pro-democracy activists would think about that. A daily reminder I suppose that, as with human rights, we must fight to preserve democracy.
