ANGELA Inglis served her community in education, writing and photography, and as a member of three committees concerned with heritage. Her death last week is a great loss.
Angela was educated at Ipswich Girls Public Day School Trust from 1945 to 1954. From 1959 to 1962 she trained at The Central School as a teacher of speech and drama. She acted in rep from 1965 to 1970 at Huddersfield, Buxton, Guernsey and York.
In 1973, Angela was appointed head of English at Acland Burghley School, Tufnell Park. While in that post she studied at Birkbeck College, gaining a BA. She remained as head of English until retiring in 2002. Her policy was to lead rather than command, and to encourage initiatives from her staff. She produced original theatre pieces involving staff and students. The English, music and art departments were frequently involved in joint activities. Angela led many school trips, including three to Russia on an exchange with Krasnagorsk School, Moscow.
When Angela became a resident of Somers Town in December 1986 she began to photograph the railway lands around St Pancras. Photography had long been an interest for her. From 2002 to 2004 she studied creative writing at Middlesex University and gained an MA.
The fruition of Angela’s dedication to writing and photography came when in 2007, with designer Nigel Buckner, she produced her book Railway Lands, Catching St Pancras and King’s Cross. This describes the landscape before and during the rebuilding of St Pancras Station, and is a unique historical record. The book is very popular and has sold out.
From 2002 Angela worked with various community groups: King’s Cross Railway Lands Group, King’s Cross Development Forum (of which she became vice-chair); and King’s Cross Action Advisory Committee. These groups aim to improve the quality of life in the area, and to retain some of the architectural heritage.
There have been numerous exhibitions of Angela’s photography. Bindman’s Solicitors have purchased a collection, and she has donated a permanent display to Camden Working Men’s College.
On Friday, October 23, at noon, a funeral procession will leave WG Miller Funeral Directors, 93-95 Essex Road, N1 2SJ, and proceed to the Golders Green Crematorium, West Chapel, for a service at 1pm.
On Saturday, October 24, at 11am, there will be a celebration of Angela’s life and work at St Pancras Old Church, St Pancras Road.
Angela worked with the three local councillors for St Pancras and Somers Town on local community issues and concerns and we valued her dedication and hard work – she will be greatly missed. We also send our condolences to her husband, Rob Inglis, who has worked so hard for the area and for Camden.
Instead of flowers, he has suggested donations to “Poet in the city”. Visit www.poetinthecity.co.uk or call 020 7014 2812.
May she rest in peace
