Support the fight to stop the killing in Gaza
Thursday, 27th June 2024
• I FIND it surprising that Martin Plaut (We must heal the divisions, June 20) would use a protest against the horrific slaughter and war crimes of Palestinian civilians and children to make his petty, factional, and cheap points, despite not being present at Gaza week in Kentish Town, and to make claims about arrests which are blatantly untrue.
Gaza week was organised by Camden Friends of Palestine. Andrew Feinstein was no more than a speaker on the first evening. The fact is that many men, women, and children of Camden gathered each day to call for peace, an immediate ceasefire, and the release of all hostages.
They did so through speeches, music, and poetry and were entirely peaceful. Their aims are supported by the vast majority of Camden residents, indeed the vast majority of people in this country, who believe that Israel does not “have the right” to target civilians.
We are saddened that Plaut, an active member of the Labour Party in Camden, should not support our fight to stop the killing in Gaza.
A small gathering of pro-Israel protesters, joined by the far right, attempted to disrupt the Gaza week by aggressive, abusive, shouting and heckling, including of Holocaust survivor Stephen Kapos and of Feinstein, who are both Jewish.
They also racially abused some of our stewards, many of them women of colour.
The supporters of the Gaza week showed remarkable restraint and dignity in face of this provocation.
No member or supporter of Camden Friends of Palestine was charged with any offence.
