Sir Keir Starmer makes his keynote speech

Holborn and St Pancras MP Sir Keir Starmer giving his leader’s speech at the Labour Party conference in Liverpool

• OH dear, he just hasn’t got it has he: the desperate need for change in almost all areas of Tory Britain, (Next stop, Downing Street for glitter Keir, October 12)?

Sir Keir Starmer, I mean, of course: I just happened to be reading your report of his suggested creation of GB Energy, based on wind and solar power, when a TV advert came on extolling the virtues of wind and solar power generation by EDF which – in case your readers and Sir Keir are not aware – stands for Électricité de France, the French equivalent of our old nationally-owned Central Electricity Generating Board, CEGB.

It could just as easily have been an advert from E.ON, a multinational electric utility company based in Essen, Germany; or Scottish Power, a vertically integrated energy company based in Glasgow, Scotland, but a subsidiary of Spanish utility firm Iberdrola… and on and on.

Labour should be promising to “take back control” of our energy supplies, not wasting money and time creating a puny new company, soon to be swallowed by one of the greedy foreign-owned ones.

Then we could look at the railway system: the great rip-off now disintegrated and run, chaotically, as we all know, by groups owned by German, Dutch, French, and Italian concerns; and even local buses; as I have written previously, the 24 bus is run by a company owned by the Dutch state-owned railway company!

Then water and sewerage companies, with Thames Water 10 per cent owned by Chinese interests. Renationalise the lot… “take back control”!

But Sir Keir’s ambitions have as much weight as the glitter thrown over him. He might get elected, but nothing will change, not in my remaining years, or his!
