SECURITY arrangements at politicians’ offices across north London are being reviewed after a man apparently armed with a golf club turned up asking to see Dawn Butler, the Labour candidate looking to be re-elected in Brent.
The New Journal understands Ms Butler was away from her office at the time of the incident yesterday (Monday) afternoon, just 24 hours after general election campaigning was temporarily suspended to remember Jo Cox, the Labour MP murdered after a surgery last year. Staff at the office in Willesden High Road were said to be left shocked and police are investigating the identity of the man. A special unit at Westminster that deals with the safety of politicians have been informed.
A police statement said: “The man – who was carrying a golf club – spoke with a member of staff. His behaviour was considered threatening and disorderly. Nobody was assaulted. The man was pushed out of the office by a member of staff and he discarded the golf club and made off on foot. Officers from Brent CID are investigating.”
Security is now being upped at several offices including Tulip Siddiq’s campaign headquarters in Kilburn. Campaigning was suspended again this morning in the wake of last night’s (Monday’s) suspected suicide bombing at the M.E.N. Arena in Manchester. Hustings that were scheduled to take place in West Hampstead have been postponed.
All MPs were given a security review after Ms Cox’s death, and the pause in the general election campaign on Sunday to remember the former Batley and Spen MP was marked by all candidates in Camden.
