Queen’s Crescent Market, with or without the apostrophe, has been left to wither
Thursday, 30th March 2017
• BEFORE we get too het up about the missing apostrophe in the market banners (Queen’s English, March 23) in Queen’s Crescent, let’s worry about the missing stalls.
In the 19 months since the council took back the market from community management by refusing to agree to a further three-year contract, (necessary to secure continuing charity funding) the number of stalls has halved.
The banners themselves – costing, we understand, about £2,500 for a year – fail to mention that market days are Saturdays and Thursdays.
A group of local residents worked hard to produced a draft plan to improve the market back in December and sent it to ward councillors, the cabinet member with responsibility for business and council officers. So far we have heard nothing back.
We note Westminster Council have responded to traders in Berwick Street Market and agreed not to privatise it.
Meanwhile Labour Camden Council is content to let Queen’s Crescent Market (with or without the apostrophe) wither and ignore local people’s efforts to restore it.
