• I WAS admitted to the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead for observation last week.

During my stay at ward 8 North and ward 8 East I was pampered by their excellent nursing staff. They made tea for me, at all hours, they medicated me, they checked my temperature and blood pressure.

In short they fulfilled all my reasonable needs without demur and they did all of this to the high standard of care for which British hospitals are renowned.

By far the vast majority of the nursing staff at that – and many other hospitals – come from a variety of overseas countries. I was attended on by Filipino, Nigerian, Italian, Portuguese, Lithuanian and Latvian nurses.

What a loss to our health service if these worthies were to be repatriated by Brexit or some other regulation. We are constantly reminded by our politicians that the National Health Service is safe in their hands.

Let them prove it by protecting their jobs. And I include the ancillary staff which is the backbone of the service.
