A Space for us? – Somers Town is taking space this August.
A ‘Pop up’ Museum summer will be ‘on tour’ in Somers Town / St Pancras in August.

Watch out for a milk float at the Friday Chalton Street market, and at 5 different locations around the area.

We will be bringing some colour and cheer to lockdown – along with free ice-cream and a prize draw for those who take part.

Not only will the pop up raise awareness of the fascinating heritage of Somers Town, but more importantly, this will help shape a grounds-up, community-led ‘people’s museum’.

“This area is facing massive and destabilising development. Yet it has an incredibly cohesive community – the legacy of social reformers and 100 years of social housing are right here. Yet Somers Town is overlooked – its heritage is ignored or, worse still, as the Journal reported just last year, this unique housing ‘art in everyday life’ intended for the working classes has been potentially stolen. We estimate about 80 Gilbert Bayes sculptures went missing from our estates – presumed stolen. A History Space will help preserve a sense of identity and place that is under threat.” – Diana Foster of Somers Town Space

The group want to reflect the voices of the whole community in the co-creation of a new History Space in Somers Town.

As the recent debates about statues of slave-owners tell us, people need a say in what historical stories are told. That’s why we’re going out to ask the community of Somers Town what they wish to see in a space which reflects their stories.

The wider vision is for a Somers Town History Space as a place for intergenerational co-designed projects with local people, set up to trace, preserve and display a fascinating local heritage.
