Pavements are no longer safe for pedestrians
Thursday, 25th January 2018
• IT is becoming obvious that pavements are no longer safe or pleasant places for people to walk (I was nearly killed by a jogger, January 11 and Dangerous… I don’t consider joggers as pedestrians, January 18).
I frequently hear the menacing sound of so-called “joggers” stamping up behind me or see them hurtling towards me on the pavement. They sometimes have an aggressive scowl on their faces and are sweating, coughing and spitting very close to you.
Apart from being repulsive it can easily evoke the flight or fight response in people. You can feel you are about to be mugged or shoved out of the way by them.
There are also many other hazards on the pavements which are making them unsafe.
I see children and adults cycling on the pavements, adults scooting, parents teaching their children to cycle or scoot on the pavements and dog owners unable or unwilling to control their dogs or clean up after them.
Over the past two or three years I have been writing to various authorities about concerns for safety on the pavements, but they all seem uninterested in this issue, and I can only think that this is because the people in charge never walk anywhere except to their car.
Are there no bye-laws and patrol officers to protect us from these anti-social nuisances?
