Now there can be a month’s worth of rubbish in one bin

• I AM all for the two-week refuse collection as a first, tiny step toward saving the planet. However I have three major objections with how Camden has handled this.
One, the “health and safety” excuse for not collecting rubbish and recycling in the front yard is nonsense – 99 per cent of all front yards are safe for the refuse/ recycling workers and they could simply skip the unsafe front yards, leaving a note saying why.
Obliging residents to lug all their bins on to the pavements the night before collection creates another health and safety issue and multiplies the chances of bins and lids being misplaced or not returned.
Two, the orange bags we are obliged to use are not biodegradable. The black bags I spent a little more money purchasing for refuse is biodegradable yet I am not allowed to use those.
Surely forcing environmentally-aware and concerned residents to 95 to 150 orange bags per year to landfill sites is not a sound policy.
Three, when there is a missed collection of rubbish, one has a month’s worth of rubbish in one bin. I phoned Camden on Tuesday and they told me someone would collect with 24 hours. No one did.
Every day for the rest of the week and this week I called Veolia directly and was, every day, assured it would be collected within 24 hours. It is now day eight and the bin is still sitting on the pavement where people have started using it as a public rubbish bin.
