Neave Brown
• NEAVE Brown was one of the people who changed the face of our borough. Far too long forgotten, it was very recently the public recognised him again (Neave Brown: architect who transformed Camden dies aged 88, January 11).
In Gospel Oak he was much more. He was an important part of our community. He lived alongside one of his first projects, the Dunboyne Estate on Fleet Road, one of the greatest examples of modernist housing.
This estate, where a strong sense of community exists, was a modern version of the much loved Victorian homes that once stood everywhere here. Wonderful terraces and small gardens invited the residents to meet and to interact.
We should be inspired by Neave’s work. We call on the council to ensure his heritage in Camden is protected, so that we all remember the possibilities that architecture can offer:
• Rename the area in front of Dunboyne Estate, towards Fleet Road, Neave Brown Place.
• Install a memorial plaque or a bronze.
• Ensure his home on the Dunboyne Estate is protected.
And set up a gallery run by volunteers to remind people of the man his work. Set up a Neave Brown scholarship to enable young people who are studying architecture to live here and be inspired, while they undertake their studies.
We send our condolences to Neave Brown’s family and friends.
