Camden goth scene in mourning after sudden death of Elizium clothes shop trader Michael Dixon
Thursday, 16th July 2015

A “BACK to Black” send-off for a popular hairdresser and legend of Camden Town’s goth scene has been organised by his heartbroken partner.
Michael Dixon was found dead at his home in Bayham Street in February after his girlfriend Mia Joseph called the police when he didn’t answer his phone.
Ms Joseph, owner of the long-standing Elizium Gothic shop in the world-famous Stables Market, wants everyone who knew him to come to the 12 Bar in Holloway Road on Saturday night.
“Michael had so many friends in Camden Town, everyone knew him,” she said. “He moved here in 2000 from Belfast and we met at the Electric Ballroom. He was a huge Prince fan.”
She added: “One of the things he was known for was coming up with the phrase ‘Camden Derry’, which has become really iconic in Camden Town, and what a lot of people call it now, because of the Irish. He was from Belfast originally.”
Mr Dixon, who was 45 years old when he died, had contacted the New Journal a few weeks before his death, saying he had lost his job at a hairdressers in Camden Town where he had been working for 15 years.
It is believed that his heart may have given way, but the cause of his death will be determined at a coroner’s inquest in St Pancras Coroner’s Court next week.
Ms Joseph said: “I’d taken him home that night because he was doing a haircut at home, and I’d gone home as I had the flu. I called the police when he didn’t call, and they went down there in the end, but told me the lights were on and it was OK. I told them to check again because he hadn’t called me back.
“The police came to my place later that night and I knew what had happened when I saw them. He would have been 46 in May.”
She said she organised his funeral where his favourite Prince song Purple Rain was played to the congregation on a turntable.
She added: “The Moody Blues’ Nights was another one of his favourites – he said it was how he saw me. Metallica too, Nothing Else Matters, that was another one he really loved. I thought Back to Black was a good name for the event. He knew Amy, too.”
She added: “We wanted to keep the funeral private, but that wasn’t how it turned out. Loads of people came – as they are – not in suits. That’s what Michael would have wanted.”
Mia has organised a big event on Saturday including a stellar cast of DJs and an auction that will start at 6pm and will go on until late.
There will be a £3 contribution towards the cost of the night and also to pay for a memorial bench that is going to be put up in Camden Square or on the canal near Camden Lock Market, Mia said.
