‘Examples where Camden puts cyclists before pedestrians’
• YOUR Cycling Special coverage failed to mention that the Camden cycle schemes have been installed at the expense of pedestrians; and that the council’s professed transport policy, that the top priority is pedestrians, is completely not true.
A few examples where Camden puts cyclists before pedestrians…
Numerous pedestrian refuges removed, such as in Guilford Street and Calthorpe Street. The refuge with tactile paving outside the Oasis pool has been taken away, requiring pedestrians to cross Endell Street to the refuge without any tactile paving, so increasing the dangers to them.
In Gray’s Inn Road the bus stops by High Holborn have been removed. Also, the bus stop just above Theobalds Road and the one just south of Calthorpe Street have been removed and replaced by one in the middle, forcing pedestrians to walk further.
The southbound bus stop for the British Museum in Southampton Row has been moved to the south of Theobalds Road increasing the risk to pedestrians in having to cross Theobalds Road.
The West End scheme has numerous pedestrian crossings that do not have the stipulated colour contrast with surrounding paving for the partially sighted.
And, there are many pedestrian crossings where the tactile paving does not extend to the back of footway as required.
