Join Labour for the possibility of change
Thursday, 15th June 2017
• CAMDEN Momentum met on Monday to celebrate Labour’s brilliant results in the election and also discuss what may happen next.
The largest ever members’ meeting, around 100 strong, was held at the Crossroads Women’s Centre in Kentish Town.
It was agreed that there were three inter-related components to the success of the campaign: a positive left wing manifesto which offered hope not fear, the enthusiasm of activists (of which we were a significant part) and the leadership of Jeremy Corbyn.
Thousands of party members and supporters turned out locally to help achieve great results for Keir Starmer and Tulip Siddiq.
Momentum was established after Jeremy Corbyn was elected leader in 2015 as a grass roots organisation to support the direction he wanted the party to take.
It has come into its own in this election. More than 100,000 people used its website to be directed towards marginal seats in which to campaign. Momentum activists knocked on 1.2million doors. In the last week of the campaign nearly one in four UK Facebook users had viewed a Momentum video.
The government is staggering to stay on its feet, the Tories kept together only by fear of a Corbyn-led alternative. It is now reported that some Tory MPs are demanding the end to austerity. It shows the bold campaign by Labour has pulled the national debate away from accepting the grim diet of cuts.
This is a tremendous opportunity for Labour to continue to build upon the enthusiasm of the campaign; 150,000 people applied to join the party in just three days after the election.
We call on all excited about the possibility of change to join Labour and also consider joining Momentum. We have an opportunity to reach out to so many more and build an unstoppable force for the next general election.
