It’s premature to claim victory over renters’ rights
Thursday, 16th February 2017
• AS a private renter who has lived in the borough for over 40 years, I agree with your assertion in your Comment, February 9, that the “housing market is broken but Theresa May shows no sign of being able to mend it”.
It also comes as no surprise to me that the government “shuns” rent control and sadly the longer tenancies that have been proposed will only apply to “new-build rental homes” so only benefiting a small minority of renters.
However, what will have a much bigger impact on the majority of renters is the welcome proposal to ban letting agents’ fees as part of the Renters’ Rights Bill currently making its way through parliament.
Worryingly, the organisations that represent landlords and agents have said they will do everything they can to oppose this; consequently any claims of a “victory” for renters is premature at this point in the process.
I would therefore urge any renters who want to see the end of letting agent fees to join the Camden Federation of Private Tenants (CFPT), at: http://www.cfpt.org.uk as they are going to be working very hard over the coming months to ensure that renters voices are clearly heard during the consultation stage, and so we can get rid of rip-off letting agents fees once and for all.
CFPT can also be contacted on: 020 7383 0151 or by email at: admin@cfpt.org.uk
