It’s one mess after another is it not?

• IS Cllr Meric Apak fit for purpose (Sorry about the mess!, April 13)?

First he came up with the bright idea of closing public toilets, to encourage people to pee and poo in the streets.

Now he has to apologise unreservedly for the rubbish collection mess (in both senses of the word “mess”), with bins often too big for the space to store them and so heavy and awkward that some residents and even the bin men can’t or won’t move them.

Meanwhile the recycle scheme for earning green points and winning rewards prizes, by signing up and getting a special card followed by endless reminder emails, continues to bewilder.

Of course, recycling is a good thing and at first I thought it must be me who was too dim to understand the scheme’s subtleties, but Camden’s project co-ordinator admits: “There is no way to monitor the recycling activities of individual households, as you can imagine that would take a huge amount of time and money.

“Instead we do rely on members reporting their recycling activities to us honestly. We hope by encouraging residents to report their recycling, this will, in turn, prompt them to recycle more as they will have it more on their conscience. “

A Camden representative recently tried to call on all 104 flats in our block, and sign us up, even though the block has no green bins on site.

Is Cllr Apak also the brains behind this conceived-in-cuckoo-land scheme?
