I'm astonished to discover the government believe it’s not their job to legislate for better fire safety

• AFTER Grenfell fire, I was astonished to discover the government believe it’s not their job to legislate for better fire safety.
A civil servant explained to a meeting of insurance companies in 2011: “If people want higher standards of fire protection, industry rather than government should be driving that improvement”.
Several organisations had been warning about the risks of combustible cladding on high-rise buildings but the officials made it clear that, because of David Cameron’s anti-regulation policy, fire minister Bob Neill was very unlikely to introduce any new regulations.
