‘We have not forgotten Mr Al-Fayed’s kindness’ [Abi Skipp Generic CC By 2.0]
• I WAS saddened by hearing of the death of Mohamed Al-Fayed, I remember him as a kind-hearted man.
I met him at a function at the time when I was volunteering with Camden In Touch, a telephone befriending service for the housebound elderly in Camden run by Joy Fraser.
I asked him if I could have “something nice from Harrods” for our forthcoming Christmas raffle. Three days later the picturesque green Harrods delivery van stopped outside the Crowndale Centre where the In Touch office was and delivered a great Harrods hamper.
Joy Fraser was taken by surprised and first thought it was a joke because I had forgotten to tell her than I had spoken to Mr Al-Fayed. No need to say that the lucky winner was overwhelmed. She had never dreamt of such a present. A year later at Christmas time another Harrods hamper arrived, without me asking for it.
Camden In Touch no longer exists. Joy Fraser went on doing other things. She recently wrote The Susu Keeper, in memory of Windrush.
But we have not forgotten Mr Al-Fayed’s kindness. Rest in peace.
