AN etching at the top of Primrose Hill featuring lines attributed to poet William Blake was unveiled on Friday.

The inscription – “I have conversed with the spiritual Sun. I saw him on Primrose Hill” – is part of a new design for the famous vantage point.

Primrose Hill Community Association and Friends of Regent’s Park and Primrose Hill were consulted over the design.

Judy Hillman, a patron of Friends of Regent’s Park and Primrose Hill, said: “We were discussing for months. Considering the millions of visitors we have up here each year we felt we had to protect what many of us consider the best view in London.

“It will provide better draining, which will protect the turf from erosion.

“There’s a wider viewing area for visitors, we’ve got more benches and the summits have been redone with golden gravel tarmac.”

Will Davies, who did the carving, said: “I used a broad font with no fancy bits. I hope the font does justice to the elegance of the quote.”

Park manager Nick Biddle added: “People who live nearby suggested quotes, but because William Blake lived in Fitzroy Road it seemed very appropriate.”
