How will the Conservatives’ attack on the elderly play out at the election?

• READING the Conservative manifesto, not only was I staggered by what they have left uncosted but also astounded by what they have not bothered to account for.

There is no tangible assessment of the impact of Brexit on the economy. This is astonishing. It is the single biggest cliff edge facing the British economy, towards which the Tories delight in propelling us, and yet they cannot be bothered to indulge us with their estimations of its impact.

And the manifesto talks (once again) of slashing immigration to the tens of thousands. As an EU citizen, the anxiety inflicted by the government’s vacillations regarding the rights of EU nationals in the UK is of severe detriment to the security of my future.

More seriously, the injustices inflicted upon non-EU migrants, including asylum seekers, is an affront to what this country represents. This mindless act of populism could cost the economy billions and could undermine our NHS.

In Hampstead & Kilburn in particular, this could have damaging consequences for the local economy.

The social care proposals are another example of the Conservatives’ arrogant laziness, which combines a lack of economic transparency with policies that target the weakest in our society.

As I understand it, older people will have to pay for care in their own home out of the value of their house.

This new system, which taxes on the basis of vulnerabilities rather than wealth or income, is quite clearly a lottery and it will disproportionately impact those who are unlucky enough to suffer from dementia.

With postal votes dropping on people’s doorsteps, I wonder how this attack on the elderly will play out. I truly hope that people reject these awful proposals.
