Do we have to wait for another tragedy before we see action?

Protesting Holly Lodge residents have been told the rooftop exits do not comply with safety standards and should be permanently locked
• YET more evidence of Camden Council’s disregard for the fire safety of its tenants, (Row over locks on roof fire exits, September 28).
However, it is council tax payers who have to foot the bill for the £500,000 fine for the gross negligence that led to the horrific death of Magdalena Fink.
Council tenants pay twice as the neglected safety measure will have to be paid for out of their rents.
Meanwhile our councillors receive “allowances” of between £10,000 and £30,000 per year for failing to ensure that legally required fire safety measures are in place. And if the mayor, the use of a chauffeur driven Roller!
Why are not the Labour councillors demanding an independent inquiry into why Ms Fink’s death was allowed to occur and responsibilities identified, so that this does not happen again?
Are there at least some Labour councillors who are prepared to put their heads above the parapet and run the risk of having the party whip withdrawn? Or do we have to wait for more tragedies?
