Dangerous cyclists ignore red lights

• I CROSS Haverstock Hill at the crossing, at the junction with Prince of Wales Road, every weekday morning with my child on the journey to school.

I really want to highlight the dangerous behaviour of many cyclists and people on scooters who are travelling south down the hill and mostly turning left into Prince of Wales Road.

There is a set of lights specifically for cyclists there as well as one for vehicles. Yet every single morning, without exception, I cannot safely cross when the lights say it is safe for us to do so, as there are multiple cyclists who simply do not stop.

Last week I counted seven in less than 10 seconds speed through the red light as people waited to cross. They come down the hill at speed, go through the red light, and often turn left into Prince of Wales Road, through another crossing, where they then also ignore the cycle lane.

I cross at a busy time when many other families with small children are crossing, in both directions, to schools and nurseries. I have seen near misses and it is only by being extra vigilant and knowing that the cyclists ignore the red light and waiting for them to pass, that we manage to cross safely.

I do not see this dangerous behaviour from cyclists at other crossings on my walks, but this one is an accident waiting to happen. Can the police and council act on this now, employ a crossing guard or have someone there during the school-run hours or must we wait for an accident and “learn lessons” afterwards?
