Do not criticise swift and decisive action

• I THINK Leader of Camden Council, Georgia Gould, made the right decision evacuating Chalcots estate and with Grenfell so fresh in our minds, I cannot understand anyone who would want to stay in a high-rise block that could potentially set alight and be totally engulfed in flames within an half an hour and have the horrific loss of life we witnessed at Grenfell.

The inconvenience of being temporarily rehoused versus losing your life or even worse, your children’s, does not bear thinking about. The loss of life at Grenfell was totally avoidable and that is what Camden Council and the fire brigade are seeking to do in this situation – avoid it.

All I can read about is criticism of this “over-the-top” reaction by Camden. Yet if Kensington & Chelsea had cared about its residents and acted in the same manner, Grenfell would never have happened.

The only positive that has come out of this awful fire is that it has forced councils to review and test all their high-rise blocks and to start the process of making them safe after years of neglect. So we should not criticise those same councils when they take swift and decisive action and start those works.

In stark contrast to Kensington & Chelsea council representatives, Georgia Gould remained at the scene all weekend and worked tirelessly from what I saw on the news to take questions and absorb anger as well as reassure residents.

I am 44 and have lived in the borough all my life and never seen such a personal reaction from the leader of Camden Council.
